Wildfires Dynamics in Siberian Larch Forests
نویسندگان
چکیده
Wildfire number and burned area temporal dynamics within all of Siberia and along a south-north transect in central Siberia (45 ̋–73 ̋ N) were studied based on NOAA/AVHRR (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/ Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) and Terra/MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data and field measurements for the period 1996–2015. In addition, fire return interval (FRI) along the south-north transect was analyzed. Both the number of forest fires and the size of the burned area increased during recent decades (p < 0.05). Significant correlations were found between forest fires, burned areas and air temperature (r = 0.5) and drought index (The Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index, SPEI) (r = ́0.43). Within larch stands along the transect, wildfire frequency was strongly correlated with incoming solar radiation (r = 0.91). Fire danger period length decreased linearly from south to north along the transect. Fire return interval increased from 80 years at 62 ̋ N to 200 years at the Arctic Circle (66 ̋33’ N), and to about 300 years near the northern limit of closed forest stands (about 71 ̋+ N). That increase was negatively correlated with incoming solar radiation (r = ́0.95).

Spatially-explicit Modeling of Siberian Boreal Forests
Circumpolar boreal forests contain one half of the terrestrial carbon stores, and have been shown to be susceptible to climate change. As climate regimes shift, the total biomass and species composition may change in ways that may promote further warming on the regional level through atmosphere-vegetation feedbacks. The purpose of this project is to develop a spatially explicit model for simula...
متن کاملLower forest–grassland ecotones and 20th Century livestock herbivory effects in northern Mongolia
We studied five lower forest–grassland ecotones in the Darhad Valley in northern Mongolia and investigated the effects of 20th Century grazing regimes and changes in grazing management on ecotone dynamics at a local scale. A total of 2968 Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) trees were cored and tree-age distribution was constructed to determine 20th Century tree establishment. Tree age and location...
متن کاملEffects of climate and fire on short-term vegetation recovery in the boreal larch forests of Northeastern China
Understanding the influence of climate variability and fire characteristics in shaping postfire vegetation recovery will help to predict future ecosystem trajectories in boreal forests. In this study, I asked: (1) which remotely-sensed vegetation index (VI) is a good proxy for vegetation recovery? and (2) what are the relative influences of climate and fire in controlling postfire vegetation re...
متن کاملSimulating Changes in Fires and Ecology of the 21st Century Eurasian Boreal Forests of Siberia
Wildfires release the greatest amount of carbon into the atmosphere compared to other forest disturbances. To understand how current and potential future fire regimes may affect the role of the Eurasian boreal forest in the global carbon cycle, we employed a new, spatially-explicit fire module DISTURB-F (DISTURBance-Fire) in tandem with a spatially-explicit, individually-based gap dynamics mode...
متن کاملOn the Effect of Thinning on Tree Growth and Stand Structure of White Birch (Betula platyphylla Sukaczev) and Siberian Larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) in Mongolia
The forests of North Mongolia are largely dominated either by larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) or birch (Betula platyphylla Sukaczev). The increasing demand for timber and firewood is currently met by removal of wood from these forest stands. Therefore, silvicultural approaches that account for both utilization and protection are needed. Thinning trials were established in the research area Altans...
